Shooting Schedule
Day of the Shoot- Saturday 28th January, 11am-4pm.
Briefing the cast- Show the actors the draft video to give them an idea of what we're aiming for, and explain what each of them will be doing.
Costume and Make up- The actors have been told what they need to wear for the video, and I think that we will probably shoot the Narrative shots first, because that means that the Protag, Myself and Tali don't have to keep changing costume and we can focus on filming a lot of performance shots afterwards.
Film the Outdoor Scenes- We decided to film the outdoor shots first as they need to be light and we're filming in the winter, which means that it will get dark quickly, and therefore affect continuity in the video. Luckily all we have to film outside is the driving away shots and the shots of the friends and the protag leaving the house.
Film the Crowd/Performance Shots- I made it clear that we should have a myriad of performance shots. This means that we would have a greater chance of achieving on-beat-editing because we would have plenty of shots of the same line in the lyrics. Like I said earlier, we need to film these shots before the Narrative ones because that would mean that everyone can go home afterwards.
Film the Narrative Scenes- These will comprise the bulk of the video, and doesn't require any particular order in shooting, it also means that we can change into costume after we've filmed the performance shots and we won't have to keep changing costumes.
Target Audience Feedback
Promotional Poster and Digipak Feedback:
For our target audience research, we gathered a handful of our friends and fellow students to come and view our illustrations and the drawing of the poster video I did. Our efforts of making them as British Punky as possible worked, and they instantly figured out that "Wink 281" was a punk band, similar to the "modern" American ones, but with the British Punk Attitude thrown in. There were however a few criticisms of the digipak, by people who perhaps hadn't caught on to the whole attitude and message being put across by the digipak. But once we had explained more about "Wink 281" and the message we were trying to put across to the audience they renounced their criticisms.
Video Feedback:
My partner and I used the same handful of people to give us feedback on the video, we sat them down to watch the draft video on the iMac, and we provided an extra narration over the video to essentially explain what would be in the captions if it were a storyboard. Feedback was primarily positive, the story of the video went down well, as well as the comical side of the video. The reasoning behind my idea of having the band perform in a living room was instantly received, I wanted them to perform in the living room to portray the teenage punky attitude of rebelling against your parents, and this is exactly what the target audience picked up on. One of the groups concerns however was the use of members of the band as the parental figures, they expressed that if my partner and I didn't make the differences between father figure and band member apparent then some viewers might get confused. They were also concerned about the crowd element of the video, they explained that we didn't have enough space to have a proper crowd in the video, and it would obstruct the view of the band almost entirely.
What was changed:
- The band logo will appear on the font of the album, as opposed to a picture of the band in front of a Union Jack image.
- The idea of having audience shots will be completely erased from the making of the video. Following the target audiences' feedback.
- Originally, the back of the album was going to have a still from the crowd shots during the production of the video, but of course, after skipping those shots, we will have to change the design of the back.
Digipack
Case Cover: The Case Cover is intended to merge the two concepts of Punk together in one image, it features the somewhat patriotic sense of punk that you would have seen in British punk a few decades ago in the form of the British Flag, and the logo and imagery that you would expect from a modern day Punk band such as Blink 182.
Back of Case: As far as backs of CD cases go, ours is fairly typical, it features the Red White and Blue colour scheme as seen in all other "Wink 281" products, and the list of songs from the album. Myself and my partner came up with the songs simply by changing around the songs from Blink 182's album "Enema of the State" and making them sound worthy of Wink 281.
Disc Tray: The Disc Tray again features the Wink 281 logo on top of the British Flag, imitating the Case Cover. I had the idea of having the logo the same size as the CD so that when you take the CD out you are greeted with the wondrous sight of the Wink 281 logo.
Back of Insert: The back of the Insert is in keeping with the end of the featured music video, I had the idea of having a montage of shots of the music video being filmed with "the band" messing around in it, this idea is typical of many punk videos from modern day bands. So for the back of the insert we simply had a small collage of photos designed online featuring the members of the band, with all the necessary "with thanks to's".
Director's Pitch
Props:
Performance shots- Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drumkit, and Microphones/Stands. I thought that if we used larger amplifiers it would make the band appear more like it's performing live to a larger audience.
Narrative Props-
Props- Mobile Phone, Forest's Car, Beer bottles
Costume- Suit and glasses for "Father Figure", Baloon boobs, skirt, and blouse for "Mother figure", the band will be dressed as you'd see bands like Sum 41 and Blink 182 in their music videos- Namely punky T-shirts, hoodies and jeans. Neighbour Bob should have a pull over and large glasses, (With combover hair).
Locations: For the shots of the protagonist driving away shots around Welford outside our shooting location (Forest's Gran's house) will be used. The house has a large living room we can use for the performance shots, as well as other large areas we will need for the shots of the parents being outraged at the music levels.
Cast:
We thought that it would be a good idea to choose cast members that looked similar and already looked like they belonged in a punky video, that way no preparation would be needed before shooting making them look different. We also thought that it would be a good idea to have a cast of musicians to decrease the risk of losing the on-beat-editing potential of the video. With that in mind, Jake, Myself, and Taliesin (Right to left) were the best choice. Tali and I were also willing to dress as the parents and feature in the Narrative aspects of the video whilst Jake would be the protagonist as their child.
Luckily Forest and I aren't without friends and so the large audience that will be featured in the film will be an assortment of friends. I had the idea of shooting the audience shots before any others, that would mean that we wouldn't have a large group of people around whilst we tried to film the rest of the Performance and Narrative Shots.
Pitch:
Nice Guys Finish Last - Green Day
The Rock Show - Blink 182
Justification-
How does this video reflect the Genre you have chosen and your band image?
As I explained in my Genre Research- Punk is more of an attitude than an actual style of music, it challenges most forms of authority, as seen with the British old stlye punk- A lot of songs challenged the Government, but nowadays in American "Modern" rock, the "authority" tends to focus more on parents. With that in mind we based our entire video around a child, in the Modern Punk target audience age rebelling against his parents. We decided to dress our band much like how Sum 41 and Blink are dressed when they feature in their videos, also the idea of having members of the band playing the parent figures is very typical of the Punk Videos.
Here is also the Draft Video for the Final Product, the decided to use models, (or in this case, Lego men) to portray the characters and to simply move them around according to the storyboard.

Pitch:
- The Video will begin with a close up of the lead singers guitar, strumming to the rhythm of the first small guitar rif.
- Immediately afterwards the video will switch to a Narrative and show the Protag and his friends sitting in the lounge with a friend passed out on the floor (Which is a line in the lyrics)
- The mother figure then returns from the task she was not in the house to do, the cast hear her, and make a break for the door and the car, and run past "Neighbour Bob" looking lustfully at them.
- There will then be a flashback of the Protag sitting on his bed recieving a text that says something along the lines of "Last night was amazing" etc. I had the idea of perhaps during the editing to show this, instead of using subtitles to show the text message, we should imitate what the T.V series "Sherlock Holmes" does, and have the text message floating above the phone after the protag picks it up.
- Cut to performance shots, close ups of Jake, Myself, and Tali performing etc.
- Cut back to Narrative, Protagonist walks into the house with the friends from before looking rough (As if they've just returned from a party). They are greeted by Tali and I in out Parents costume, and are very angry. Close ups of us shouting into the camera, and close ups also on one of the friends cheeks- "It will have a lipstick kiss on it)
- Cut back to more Performance footage
- Protag then confront his parents again, this time alone. They are shouting at him again, and there will be shot reverse shots of the parents and the protags reaction, emphasis on his clenched fist.
- Cut back to Performance again, this time using edgy awesome shots.
- The parents will then be shown banging on the walls of the lounge where the band is performing, they then give up, and walk away in a big huff.
- Cut back to edgy performance shots again
- End of the video will be a montage of shots of outtakes, and "bloopers" from the making of the video. We were told that we could do this so long as we could find a few examples of it being done within the genre- with that in mind, here are a list of Punk music videos with the end featuring bands acting crazy together and the outtakes from the making of the video.
